Distilling Livelihoods in Timor-Leste: Fataluku Ecologies of Practice

Abstract This paper builds on the celebrated monograph by James J. Fox, entitled, Harvest of Palm: ecological change in eastern Indonesia (1977). Fox’s work drew attention to contribution sugar palm economies among communities south-eastern Indonesia. His study highlighted contrasting ecologies two orientations livelihoods; one approach celebrates benefits low impact, sustainable lontar islands Rote and Savu. The second foregrounds destructive ‘slash burn’ maize neighbouring Islands Sumba Timor. In this I offer a comparative, middle path perspective, focusing practice production liquor distilling Fataluku people far-eastern Timor, but context strong farming practices focused seasonal rice production. strength traditions reinforces role as vital component mixed economy livelihood foraging farming.
